A BIG PICNIC.
TIMARU FRIENDLY SOCIETIES. A DAY IN ASHBURTON DOMAIN. The streets of Ashburton to-day appeared unusually crowded as excursionists by the Timaru United Friendly Societies picnic came up from the domain in quest of ice-creams and cooling drinks. In all, nearly 2000 picnickers journeyed from Timaru by two long fecial trains, which arrived in Ashburton at 10.30 and 11 o'clock respectlVlny"the Domain, the visitors were distributed in the kindly shade of the bio- trees, where the Timaru Municipal Band, under the leadership of .Lieutenant W. H. Osborne, played mdefatigably, pausing but a short time between selections On the Oval, children who were apparently hot troubled with the heat, took an enthusiastic and active interest in the programme of games and races conducted by a band of energetic officiaAs far as couid be seen, the day was being thoroughly enjoyed, and the visitors will be sorry when the trains leave, at 5.30.
