COUNTY CENTRES

(From Our Own Correspondents.) METHVEN. The monthly meeting of the Committee of the Volunteer Fire Brigade was held in the Mt. Hutt office on Wednesday evening. Mr « • JL Sheffield presided, and there were also present -.-Messrs Jl All m , JMcD. Anderson, S. Buckett, W. JOwen H Fryer (superintendent) and AG.' Foreman (hon. sec ) Apologies for absence were received from Messrs W C Battson and W. Morgan. The balance-sheet in connection with the reeent Gala.showed that the effort.had been a most successful one. The total amount received was £ll7 Os 10d ; and the expenses were £29 13s Bd. leaving a net credit balance of £»7 is <**•-•* heartv vote of thanks was passedl to all ■those"'who had assisted to make the function a success. A .special vote of thanks was accorded Mr W., of Ashburton, who generously lent tne sideshow apparatus. It was decided S vote £5 toward the Brigade social fund as a token of appreciation of the assistance given.by the members of the brigade at the Gila. The secretary reported that the Methven Picture Co. had offered to give a benefit programme far the funds to-morrow. . The district roads are «U in good order comparatively few being,. B * aU pot-holed. The railway line road from kakaiais probably the worst, but cantractors are now at work shinglms the worst portion, that between Lyndhurst and XJrral railway stations. Satistac tory news to motorists who use this road is that a dangerous comer at the junction of the cross roads at Cairntrae station is being attended to ana a concrete culvert put in by the County Council. The Main Highways to and from Methven are in an excellent state particularly, that from Methven to Ashburton. The County Council has had the grader over this road recently, and too surface is a credit, to the authorities. Motorists wiU also find subsidiary roads in the Mt. Hutt district excellent for motoring. The many beautv spots of the district are all. accessible to cars, and are worthy ot more liberal patronage than they receive. McLenrian's and McFarlane s Bush, and Pudding Hili Dam axe all within easy motoring distance by wood roads. The ascent of Mt. Hutt (7180 H.) presents no undue difficulty, and those making it will be well repaid tor the trouble by the very fine view of both back country- and the plains and coast scenery. During the recent holiday season may parties, including women and children, made this ascent.
