TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From "Guardian," January 20, 1903). Mill at Waterton.—The farmers of the Waterton district are considering the feasibility of acquiring the Waterton Hotel and converting it into a flour mill, on the expiration of its license. The Volunteer Service.—Thursday's. "Gazette" contains the following notifications in regard to the Volunteer service:—Lieutenant A. A. Fooks to be promoted to captain in the Ashburton Mounted Rifles, Lieutenants Cuthbertson and G. F. Tucker have resigned from the Ashburton Guards. Institute of Accountants.—-At the examinations recently conducted by the Incorporated Institute- of Accountants, the following Ashburton students were successful: —Mr A. Gee completed as an associate, having gained a. partial pass last year;. Mr. R. A, Collins gained a partial pass as associate. The Half-Holiday.—At a conference of representatives, of the tradespeople and local' bodies of Canterbury, in Christchurch yesterday it was resolved, after much, argument, that the halfholiday should bo- on Thursday. It was further decided to petition the Government asking for) a universal half-holi-day throughout New Zealand.

Presentation.—At Devane's Hotel, last evening Mr W. dfr B. Compton, who is leaving Ashburton shortly, was presented with a travelling bag and a shaving set by representatives* of the various Ashburton Associations. Mr Compton is going to Kaikoura as Inspector of Roads for the' Kaikoura County Council. Forged Coins.—Ashburton tradespeople are to be warned that a number of counterfeit coins are- in circmfetioii, and that' it would' bV wise- to examine closely half-sovereigns before- accepting them. ,
