COUNTY CENTRES

(From Our Own Correspondents.) MOUNT SOMERS. ' The annual meeting of the Mount Somers Library subscribers*“was again poorlv 'attended. Mr J. T. Bull presided* The balance-sheet showed receipts £35 8s 9d (including £l9 8s 6d subscriptions and £ll 10s Government subsidy), and expenditure £3O 13s 3d, leaving a credit balance of £4 15s 6d. The sum of £25 8 ( s lOd had been spent on. new books. Over 20 books had been donated my Mrs T. W. Hix, the total number added being 243. Compared with the previous year the number of subscribers had declined until the last two quarters when an improvement was shown. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr P. H. Jones (who has left the district) for his services as a member of the committee during the last four years, for three of which he was chairman. A vote of thanks was ' also accorded the librarian (Miss 17. Wood). Subscriptions and library hours were again agreed to as last year. The following committee was elected: — Misses L. Wood (librarian) and J. Davidson; Messrs H. Morgan. G. L. Nell and J. T, Bull (chairman). It was decided to purchase a set of histories of the Regiments of the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces in the Great War. The weather timing the last fortnight improved, although’ still very changeable, about two successive fine days being quite a record. Conditions at the week-end were wet, and over half an inch of rain fell, necessitating the abandonment of all outdoor pleasures. Monday was particularly warm, but a drizzling rain fell throughout Tuesday, .22 points being recorded at evening, when prospects for an improvement were good. N e A good deal of shearing remains to be completed, sis little moa-e than a shed full is done at a time, owing to the continued broken weather. Runholders some 20 and 30 miles further back have experienced better luck, and most of the sheds have had an um interrupted run as little rain has fallen for some weeks. In fact, it is stated that the country there would be benefited by a good rain. With the progress of shearing in the Ashburton Gorge, . various means of transport are now daily employed in hauling the wool down the gorge, and as roads and fords are not adoptable for heavy motor transport, some of the stations still find it necessary to- continue with the services of the old-time waggons and teams. 1 Daylight Saving has now had a fair trial, and although only' a few refused to ‘give it a test, farmers and other residents have failed. to be impressed with the scheme, and each week sees added numbers “putting the clock back/ 5 and adopting the former time. The farmer’s work usually ends with darkness, and an additional hour at the beginning of the day leaves insufficient time for needed rest, and impaired vitality results. - Mr and Mrs Gr. Alexander, who have been resident in the district for several years, have left to take up their residence at Alford Forest. Mrs Alexander has been connected with the Plunket Society since its formation, and Mr Alexander has been a member of the school committee during the past two years. Although the early morning was misty, yesterday saw a welcome return to pleasant sunny conditions, a prolonged spell of which would be most welcome.
