(Received This Day, 8.55 a - m -) v LONDON, January 18. • Baron Byng’s long-deferred Viscounty has been gazetted. It was conferred in October, 1926, but Lord Byng refused to pay almost £IOOO m fees for the honour, for whidh politicians pay nothing. Lord Byng at present declines to say whether he paid the fees.

. Viscount Byng of Vimy, who commanded the Canadian Corps and other units in the Great War, is a son of the Earl of Strafford, and is 63 years of age. He was created Baron Byng of Vimy and of Thorpe le Sokeni in 1919 and deceived a grant of £30,000. He was Governor-General of Canada from 1921 to 1926. fees paid by treasury.
