It is officially stated that Mr Justice Blair will commence his duties at Auckland on February 1.
Mr J. R. Templin (Consulting En* gineer to the Ashburton Electric Power Board), who is at present abroad, is expected back in New Zealand early next month.
Mr F. Longbein (District Engineer for the Public Works Department) and Mr J. Simpson (Inspecting Engineer) were in Ashburton to-day on departmental business.
A London cablegram states that Sir John Simon, K.C.. M.P., who is going to India in a few days as chairman of the Royal Commission on the porernment of India, announces his retirement from the Bar.
At the request of the South African Government the King has aporoved of a two years' extension of the Earl,of Athlone's term of office as. GovernorGeneral of the Union (says a London message). The Earl was appointed in 1923.
In the Senior National Scholarship examination Richard Alcorn Carson, of the Ashburton High School, with 1550 marks, reached the standard of qualification (says a Wellington Press Association message).
In the New Zealand University examination for the Degree of Bachelor of Agriculture, Mr L. W. Gorman, of Ashburton gained passes in mechanical drawing, geology, agricultural zoology, farm engineering and agricultural chemistry.
