EAST ASHBURTON CARNIVAL.

SOME WELL-CONTESTED EVENTS

The East Ashburton Swimming Club's carnival was held last evening in the Hampstead Memorial Baths. There was an attendance of about 300. The water was warm, though swimmers found the air cold when waiting between events. The entries were large and the swimming was good, the heats and final of the Curtis Cup race providing some particularly good racing The onicials are to be congratulated on the expedition and efficiency With which the events were decided. During the evening the President (Mr F. Curtis) announced that it was hoped to hold carnivals 1 fortnightly, and trusted that the excellent attendance of the evening would be maintained. The results were as follow: —

NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS.! WANGANUI REPRESENTATIVES. (Per Press Association.) WANGANUI, January 17. Wangamii will be represented at the New Zealand swimming championships bv a team of eight, comprising Norman Dowsett (100 yards), L. Smith (220 yards breast-stroke), H. Cowan (100, 220 and 440 yards and breaststroke intermediate), Miss N. Straiten (100 and 220 yards intermediate), .Miss Zona Haworth (50 and 100 yards junior), Miss' W. Melton (50 yards ju- ' nior brenst-strokie), -Master R. Haworth 100yds intermediate breaststroke and intermediate boys' dive). Dowsett, Smith, Gowafi and Newall left for tlie south to-day. The others leave to-morrow. N. Dowsett has been showing fine form recently and should be equal to ■something like his own record time for the 100 yards event. The others are also swimming, well and should perform creditably. THE AUCKLAND TEAM. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 17.
