TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From “Guardian,” January 17, 1903) Angling—Messrs A. Rickman, C. Denshire and A. Pilbrow, fishing at Cole’s Creek yesterday landed 59 trout, oue caught by Mr Rickman weighing 10 P °Fire° Brigade Competition.—The team from the Ashburton Fire Brigade which travelled to Christchurch on Friday to take part in the Canterbury Fire Brigade’s annual tournament, gained three firsts, three seconds, one third and one fourth, which is an excellent performance for a team which lias never before competed against outsiders. Ten brigades were entered for the tournament. Results in which Ashburton were l placed were:—Hose, hydrant, and union (11) • Chester St., Oliristchurcli (41 3-5 sec) 1; Ashburton (43 2-ssec) 2 • Manual Engine (5): Chester Street (41 3-5) 1, Asnburton (44 1-5) 2; Res cue Race: J. Donn and J. Rule (Ashburton) 1; Hose Reel, flat, for five men : Ashburton (63 4-5) 1, Sumner (70 1-5) 2. Firemen’s Foot Race: J. Hillgrove (Ashburton) 1. Gymnastic Club.—-A movement is_on foot to form a gymnastic club and school of physical culture in Ashburton. A strong committee has been formed including Messrs D. Thomas (chairman), J. Snodgrass, G. S. Mathias, W. Hodgkins, and D. Wood. Iho classes will be conducted by Mr A. H. Jewiss, gold and silver medallist, who has been instructor at the Canterbury Gymnastic Club for the last five years. 'Oath of Allegiance.—Colonel 1. -TV. Porter, C.R., has appointed the fo lowing officers of the Ashburton Guards to administer the Oath of Allegiance lo volunteers enrolling in the corps: Gaptain TV. E. Dolman, V.D., Captain A A. Fooks, V.D., and Lieutenant VV. J. S. Schwartz.
