ASHBURTON RACES

TME SUMMER MEETING. THE CONCLUDING EVENTS. The Ashburfon County Racing Club's summer meeting was concluded on Saturday afternoon. Though the weather was at first threatening, it cleared somewhat as the afternoon progressed. I WON £IO,OOO. EX-NEW ZEALANDER'S PERTH CUP. i • BIG COUP WITH PHOENIX PARK. ■ Phoenix Park, a New Zealand-bred gelding, won the Perth Cup on January 2, in record time, defeating Pica Pica by a short- half-head, with Spearage, a former Victorian performer, in third place. * , . . Behind Phoenix Park's win is hidden an interesting story, embracing one of the cleverest betting coups ever effected in W.A. (says the Melbourne "Sporting Globe.") Before the Perth Cup Phoenix Park jßgured as one of the rank outsiders, but at the calling of the card he was backed to win a small fortune by Mr Dave Price, a visitor from Melbourne, who is associated with trotting in. Victoria. In an unostentatious manner, Mr Price took all the long odds offered about Phoenix Park for the owner, MiHarry Guthrie, a building contractor of Perth. This was the first intimation the public received that Phoenix Park was fancied by the stable, as Mr Guthrie had two other horses in the Cup, Arimond and Char, whose prospects were highly regarded. • Outside followers of the stable there were few big winners. Mr Guthrie stated after the race that he won £IO,OOO, which is big money nowadays on the Western turf. Mr Guthrie is wealthy, and races his horses mainly for sport, but enjoys a tilt at the ring occasionally, and when he lands a winner the bookies remember it for a long time. ~ ~ ~ - Nearlv a year ago Mr Guthrie selected Phoenix Park as a likely Cup winner. The horse was imported from New Zealand by Mr J. J. Q'Hara, but failed in short distance races. Being by Kilhroney by En Parole, it was thought he might stay, and so Mr Guthrie bought him for about 500 guineas About three weeks ago Phoenix Park made hacks of a good class field in the Belmont Park Cup, over a mile and a quarter, but even that did not brin«- him into prominence for the Perth Cup. Five days before the big event the horse ran nearly last in a welter field, and receded to a long price in the Cup betting. The stable commission., however, brought him down to just over double figures. He just managed to win. ' * . Pica Pica, a long chance, led nearly all the way, and was, beaten only in the last few strides.
