SCENE IN CHURCH
THE SUNG EUCHARIST. CONGREGATION SING HYMNS. VICAR CALLS IN THE POLICE. (A*.P.A. and "Sun" Cables.) (Received Tins Day, 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, January 15. Resentment of \h£> congregation against the Anglo-Cutholic ritual culminated in the calling in of. the police at St. Cuthbert's Church, Darwen (Lancashire), alio an abrupt abandonment of the morning service. The majority of worshippers objected to the vicar (the- Rev. E. Lawria) using a. sung Eucharist. When he. proceeded to the altar to lead the singing of the Eucharist, over 100 of the congregation rose and sung hymns and knelt. Some* women quitted the church, sobbing. Meanwhile, the organist played music conflicting with the hymns. When the congregation reached the third hymn, the vicar left the church and brought the police. The vicar then addressed those protesting, saying, "Do you know that you are very blasphemous?'' Some replied, "We want our own service, and we are going to have it." Confusion reigned, and the protesters resumed singing. The curate and the choir returned to the vestry. The vicar requested the congregation to leave, and the service ended.
