It was reported that authority had been leceived from the' Public Works Department for the formation of 16b chains on the- Brothers’ Peter’s Road. The clerk was instructed to call tenders tor the formation and shingling of Coskerie’s Road, 100 chains when the authoritv is to hand from the Public Works Department. It was reported that the gorse grubbing contract had Been completed, and it was agreed that steps be taken to collect the cost. oi the work from the owner of adjoining land. The tender of Mr W. O. Skilling, of Tinwald, of £ls 10s for the right to cut cocksfoot on the roads was accepted. The secretary was instructed to write to Mrs George Murdoch and family expressing the Board s deepest sympathy in. their sad bereaveThe weather continues unsettled. After a particularly hot day on Tuesday the weather broke dull on W eanesday and a thick drizzle fell throughout the greater part of the day.

RAKAIA. A car driven by Mr J. Crossley, Rakaia, and one driven by Mr Collins, of • Ashburton, collided at the intersection, of Rakaia South Road and Bridge Street, with the result that Mr Crossley sustained a broken rib, and was badly shaken. Both cars were snghtly damaged. „ A social was held in St: Mark s Sunday Schoolroom on Wednesday evening for the purpose of bidding farewell to- Mrs R. Breach, who was leaving on a holiday to Melbourne. The evening was devoted to dancing and competitions. Mr M. P. Cooke presented Mrs Breach with a travelling cushion on behalf of St. Mark’s Choir and church workers. Music was supplied by Misses M. and J. McDonald and Messrs W. A. Smith and T. Lawler. Mr Botherway acted as M.O. MOUNT SOMERS. The perfect weather experienced early in the week gave place to a further chance on Wednesday. Drizzling ram fell throughout the day, IS points being recorded up to yesterday morning. Yesterday was a perfect summer day. . Reports from the Buccleuch district state that shearing is almost completed. Crops, especially wheat, are looking well, and again give promise of splendid yields, although there will be an abundance of straw. Some of the heavier crops have been laid several times recently, but fortunately have revived with every glimpse of sunshine. As a farmer described it: “they are just see-sawing.” . Gape crops are patchy, but turnips give better promise. Lverjthin rr generally is backward, and a warm spell is needed for both crops and stock being especially needlul lor fattening off lambs.
