THE UNEMPLOYED

POSITION IN WANGANUI.

WANGANUI, January 12. A few days ago the' Mayor, Mr Rogers, wired to the Prime Minister for relief for unemployed here. He has received a reply to the effect that the departmental figures only showed six unemployed in Wanganui. This morning a meeting of unemployed was called by the Mayor, when 270 registered. Practically all were labourers. In addition there are a large number of students who have just left secondary schools and who are seeking employment. Resolutions were passed asking the Government to take immediate steps to relieve the situation, and protesting strongly against immigrants being brought into the country while the present conditions exist. DUNEDIN SHOP ASSISTANTS.

DUNEDIN, January 12. A large number of girls usually employed as shop assistants are at present out of work, and a Trades Hall official stated this morning that fewer casual hands had been placed this year than had ever been his experience previously, despite the fact that outwardly, at least, business had been quite as good as in previous years. Another alarming phase is that male shop assistants from such outlying districts as Oamaru and Milton are coming to the city in search for work, an almost unheard-of-state of affairs for this time of the year. The woollen mill industry appears to be in a fairly stable condition at the present time, and few mills hands are reported to be out of work. A conference of mill employees was held recently, representatives reporting that full time was being .worked throughout New Zealand, which seemed likely to continue, and indicates that the industry is sound.
