LAUNCH ON FIRE.
DISASTER ON THE ELBE. TWO WORKMEN DROWNED. THIRTY-SIX SERIOUSLY BURNED. (Per Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 1.15 p.m.) BERLIN, January 12. One of the great motor launches used to convey Harburg dock labourers to work caught fire on the Elbe as the result of the explosion of the benzine tank. Ninety men were aboard the vessel, which was half-way over the river when flames shot from the motor. In a moment the boat was wrapped in flames from stem to stern. A panic ensued. Men whose clothes wore x afire jumped into the icy water, ■on which ice was floating. Fortunately many boats were near, and most were quickly rescued. Thirty-six were admitted to the hospital in a serious condition owing to burns. Two were drowned. ' The accident was due to a workman transgressing an order forbidding smoking.
