GRAIN AND PRODUCE* THE ASHBURTON MARKET. - There is little or no movement in the Asliburton grain market. As the crops are so backward, no new season's grain, except for a, fey/ consignments of oats, is expected for a fortnight or three weeks. Prices ruling are similar to those published last week, on; trucks at country stations, sacks extra ; unless otherwise stated:— Milling Wheat—-Tuscan '6s 6d. All prices nominal. Good whole fowl-wheat 6s sd. Oats—A Gartons 2s Bd, B Gartons 2s 6d; seed Algerians 2s 9d, feed 2s 6d; good dark heavy Duns 2s 9d, feed 2s 4d. Western Wolths Is 9d, Italian Is 9d to 2s, cocksfoot 6_d. Chaff—G.B.O.S. to £3 ss. SOUTH CANTERBURY. TTMARU, This Day. The grain and produce markets at present are practically lifeless, the only business transacted being in lines for forward delivery, and even then very little has actually been written. A few lines of partridge peas for March-April-May delivery are being discussed at 6s on trucks for No. 1 quality. The present weather conditions, however, would lead one to think that there will not be a great many lines of this quality in the district.

The potato crops are looking well, and everything indicates a good yield. Merchants are offering £3 15s for forwaxcl delivery, but growers are asking £4, and business is not being reported at that figure. In wheat, there js practically nothing T --~~ There ar» however, a few small orders for immediate delivery, fowl wheat at 6s 6d. For forward deiiverv, wheat lines of Tuscan have been quoted at 5s 8d to 5s lOd, but no actual business is being done. Oatsi are being quoted between merchants at 3s Id, f.0.b., sacks in, but no transactions are reported. There is' practically nothing doing as far as seeds are concerned.

Entries at Addington generally were smaller to-day, and there was a recovery in prices in most of the major sections of stock. Store Sheep.—There was a much larger entry, comprising for the most part lambs. There was a sound sale for rape lambs, with an advance of a shilling a head on last week's rates. Good ewes and forward wethers also showed improvement. Good m.s. three-quarter-bred lambs made up to 25s 3d, forward rape lambs 23s 4d to 24s sd, medium rape lambs 22s 3d to 23s Id, backward rape lambs 17s to 19s Bd, forward four and six-tooth wethers 23s 7d to 24s Bd, medium four and sixtooth wethers 21s lOd to 23s 4d. good two-tooth wethers 23s to 25s 3d, • inferior two-tooth , wethers 17s 3d to 205 2d, pood four, six, and eight-tooth ewes 27s to 29s 9d, medium four, six, and eight-tooth ewes 22s lid to 2os 3d, two-tooth ewes 25s 9d to 27s sd; aged ewes and mixed lambs 14s lOd. Fat Lambs.—lßso were entered. As the butchers were keenly in the, market values were fully up to schedule advancing on last week by Is to 16 6d a head. Extra prime heavy lambs realised up to 34s lOd, prime 28s 6cl to 325, medium 25s 6d to 28s. Fat Sheep.—A small entry of eight races, compared with an average of 10 to 11- There were a few outstanding lines, but the bulk of the entry were medium to aged ewes. A keen demand by butchers, and values generally were above export schedule. Big prime wethers were better by 2s' a head, and other sorts by Is 6d. Extra prime wethers fetched up to 38s 4d, prime wethers 32s to 34s 6d, medium wethers 28s to 31s, light 24s 6d to 27s 6d ; extra prime ewes 30s to 34s 7d, prime 25s to 295, medium 20s to 245. Fat Cattle—A similar sized entry to. last week, SCO head in number, met an improved sale, good cattle being up by 20s a head, with other sorts a shade firmer. Prime medium weight beef made 38s 6d to 41s per lOOlibs (in a few cases to 42s 6d); medium 35s to 37s 6d heavy weight 33s to 37s 6d, inferior 25s to 2Ss. Extra prime heavy steers brought up to £2O 2s 6d, prime heavy £l6 to £lB 10s, medium weight £l3 10s to £ls 15s; extra prime heifers to £l3 17s 6d, prime £ll 5s to £l3, medium £8 15s to £11; extra prime cows to £l3 17s 6d, prime £lO 10s to £l2 10s, medium £7 10s to £9 10s.

Vealers were a very small entry, and an improved sale resulted; 12 to 18months' sorts made up to £7 ss, good vealers £4 17s 6d to £5 10s, others 25s to £4 ss; calves 5s to 15s. Dairy cattle met a good sale. Second to fourth calvers realised £7 10s to £9 10s, medium £6 to £7 ss; good heifers £4 10s to £B. Store Cattle.—Several lines of young steers and heifers were forward and sold well. Two and three-year steers fetched £6 18s 6d to £7 7s 6d, [pearling to 18 months, £3 10s to £3 18s sd; yearling heifers £3 15s to £3 8s 6d, 2 year heifers £4 to £4 lis; best cows £3 to £5 ss, bulls £3 10s to £8 lis. Fat Pigs—There was a. moderate entry, but an excess of over-weight baconers, which were disposed of with difficulty. In the case of one line of 30 odd the lightest pigs sold at 6s 6d a head more than the heaviest. Choppers made £3 to £3 17s 6d, baconers £2 5s to £3 Is (average per lb 3£d to 5Jd); porkers 34s to 38s, heavier sorts 4Cs to 48s 6d (averag s|d to 7d). Stor Pigs.—There was no change in values Small weaners 8s to 14s, good weaners 15s to 17s; slips 15s to 18s 6d; stores 19s 6d to 28s 6d; extra large to 345.

THE STOCK MARKETS. BXJRNSJDE. DUNEDIN, January 11. Fat sheep and lambs went up in price a: little at the Burnside stock sales today. Fat Cattle.—A yarding of 185 was

comprised of some nice heifers' and prime bullocks, together with a big sprinkling of plain and heavy cows. It was anticipated that the rates for the best quality bullocks would be about on a par with last week's. Prices:—■ Prime ox beef 41s per 1001 b, plain 37s 6d, heifers 37s 6d to 40s, cows 22s 6d to 255. Fat Sheep,—There was 5 yarding of 1560 fat sheep. Medium to very fair quality was shown, but a number of inferior ewes and unfinished wethers were penned. There were relatively few pennings of prime sorts. The market opened much the same as last week, to improve Is to Is 6d per head generally. The rates were better for all prime sheep. There was no change in medium ewes. Prices: —Extra heavy wethers 43s to 46s 6d. prime 38s 6d to 40s 3d, medium 30s to 345, unfinished 27s to 28s 6d, best heavy ewes 36s 9d to 42s 3d, prime 24s 9d to 265, light inferior lis 6d to 16s, prime wether mutton 63 to 6Jd per lb, prime heavy ewes 4Jd, aged ewes 4d. Lambs. —A penning of 556. The quality was from fair to prime and included a number of well-grown lambs which, however, lacked finish. Exporters and butchers weiv operating, and the demand was keen. Prices were firm to 9d better than last week's sale. Prices —Extra heavy lambs to 37s 3d, prime 31s to 345, medium 27s to 295, unfinished 20s 6d to 225, average price per lb 9Jd. Store Cattle —The yarding of 150 was made up mainly of cows and" t'oung sorts, and "some eighteen to twentythree and four-year-old 6teers. Prices were forward., three and four-year-old mixed colour bullocks selling at £lO 10s, very fair three-year-olds at £9 12s - 6d, and cows and other cattle were un- ' changed. , Pigs.—One hundred and forov-ftve fats and 94 stores were yarded. THE WOOL MARKET. THIRD WELLINGTON SALE. _____ / WELLINGTON, January 11. The third Wellington wool sale of the season commenced to-night and the total to be offeied at this series is 27,000 bales. The wool offered .is bright and attractive and light in condition. Bidding was* keen and well sustained and all sections of the trade appeared desirous of getting parcels. Crossbred wool is in good demand. There was a distinct .recovery in values, December prices having been less than November, and prices for fleece wool and for lambs' wool were equal to those ruling in November, in some cases being a shade above.
