The Tancred Street crossing was the scene of a narrow escape from death or serious injury this morning as the train due from Timaru at 10.15 struck and smashed a car, in which Mr George Brand, of Wakanui, a well-known stock buyer, was driving. As he saw the train approaching, Mr Brand, with great presence of mind, leapt from the car and was fortunate in escaping uninjured. The car, a> five-seater Maxwell, was carried 40 feet broad-side on, along the permanent way, and was then thrown, to one side of the line and facing south. The left back wheel was broken off and the axle forced 18 inches into the ground. The left mud-guard, whicE had been struck by the engine, wascrumpled back agamst the body of the car, and the wheel driven partly, under the chassis. The glass in the windscreen was shattered, and the left side of the car was badly smashed. Constable Bentley, who was immediately on the scene, took charge of the wrecked car.
