SEAMEN'S DISPUTE
GENERAL STRIKE FEARED. IF NO EARLY SETTLEMENT. DECISION OP MELBOURNE MEN. (Per Press Af-sor -'tion—Copyright.) (Received This Dav, 11.80 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. The Victorian branch of the Seamen's Union decided that if a satisfactory settlement of the seamen's dispute is not reached within 14 days the crews of all inter-State vessels will leave their ships immediately on arrival at home ports. This is interpreted to mean that a general strike will be declared if the Sydney branch endorses the decision.
FEARS OF EXTENSION. THE POSITION AT SYDNEY. (Per Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 10.15 a.m.) SYDNEY. This Day. No development has occurred in regard to the seamen's strike. It is feared, however, that the trouble will extend to other ships at the week-end. DECISION BY THE OWNERS. SHIPS TO BE LAID UP, (Received This Day, 9.5 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. The steamship owners concerned in the seamen's dispute state that they have done all in their power to keep the trade going, but they are not prepared to allow the law to stand in abeyance and place themselves at the mercy of the men. Considering that the next move should come from the seamen, they have decided to leave the. vessels where the men abandoned them and await developments. They add that since last January, on no fewer than 111 occasions, vessels were delayed through the actions of members of the Seamen's 1 Union. -
