UNKNOWN WARRIOR
OPENING OF TOMB DENIED. Recently* reports were current in England and overseas that the Tomb of the "Unknown Warrior” in Westminster Abbey had been secretly opened, and that certain valuable mementoes left by mourning relatives of soldiers who were recorded as "missing” had 'been deposited therein. Mr B. F. Knapp-Flsher, Receiver-General of the Abbey, stated to a representative of the "Daily Telegraph” recently, however, that since the present black marble slab was laid over the grave in 1921, the Tomb had not been in any way disturbed. "Ftom time to time,” he said, "valuable mementoes are deposited on the Tomb by relatives of men who made the supreme sacrifice ini the Great War. All these things are collected and stored in the Under Croft, one of the oldest portions of the Abbey, dating back to Norman times. There are many interesting things among the collection of tokens deposited on* the Tomb. You can take it from hie that since the present black marble slab was placed in position, the grhve has never been moved, or interfered with in any Way at all. Further, there is no intention of opening the grave.”
