AT LEVEL CROSSING.

MOTOR HITS ELECTRIC CAR. (I'er Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Only the quick manipulation of the steering \vheel by the driyer of the car averted a bad level crossing smash at the Styx railway crossing shortly after noon yesterday. Mr Mason, who was accompanied by his wife, wa,s about to drive over the crossing when the electric railway car passed. Mr Mason neither saw nor heard the approach of the car, and became aware, of its presence when he was within a few feet of it. He swung his car round rapidly, so that what would otherwise have been a straiglit-on collision with the side of the moying electric) car, became a glancing one. The motor-car ran in contact with the electric car until it struck the fence on the side of the road. The electric car --idled up a. little further on. The side of the motor-car was practically torn out, hut no one was injured, and it was possible afterwards to drive the car to town for repair^. The guard and several of the passengers of the electric car stated that the horn was sounded some distance before the crossing was reached, and that the driver took every precaution. The crossing is equipped with flashlight signals, and it is stated that the signals were in perfect working order. No damage was suffered by the electric ear.
