Auckland’s' opening batsmen, Bowley (3) and Mills (3) resumed, to the bowling of Read and Nixon. In Read’s second over, Mills made a fly fast and low to Page, in the slips, the fieldsman holding the catch. 14-1-TT Cooper opened with a single and a couple off Read, being nearly caught by Nixon at forward-leg off the second last hall. He scored a boundary off the final ball of the over. Bowley clipped Nixon to the off. boundary, but experienced difficulty with the rest of the over, as Nixon was bumping them down. .

The Canterbury ground fielding was magnificent. At 33, Merritt replaced Nixon, Cooper turning the last ball of his first over for a couple. Three singles came off Read’s next three balls, Cooper driving the last to the screen. Merritt begau to develop an abnormal spin in conjunction with a good length, and Bowley was content to see a maiden over out. Page put a man out deep to cover Cooper’s straight drives. The Edenite went forward resolutely to Merritt, occasionally with unexpected result, one attempt to drive ending in a slip shot. Newman replaced Read and swung them appreciably, carrying a good deal of spin and using his feet. Bowley stepped out to Merritt, but Cooper now played the colt with studied care. Bowley drove Newman to mid-off for a single, bringing 50 up in 56 minutes, the batsmen scoring six off the over. The Auckland pair was batting soundly, and the score was 73 for one at 12.30 (Bowley 39, Cooper 23). McEwin (Canterbury's 4low righthand spin bowler) was tried for the first time in.the match, vice Newman. His first was well up on the leg side, Bowley failing to connect. His second was similar but fatal to the batsman. It came off his pacW and liit his wickets. 75-2-41. . . Anthony started with a single, and Cooper cut Read for four.- With five men on the boundary it was difficult to get McEwin across the line. After scoring four, Anthony- was beaten all the way by Read. 86-3-4. Gillespie filled the gap and was not happy to McEwin. He cocked one up into Newman’s hands at short forward leg, the, Englishman dropping it. Gillespie saved himself a pair of specs by driving Read for two. McEwin was obtaining a good spin and had! the batsman completely troubled at this At the luncheon adjournment, Auckland had scored 128 for three wickets.
