GIFTS TO A WOMAN.

BANKRUPT EX-MAYOR. Admissions that he had given a woman large sums of money, motorcars, and other expensive articles, were made by Thomas H. Good, ex-Mayor of Scarborough, during his examination in Scarborough Bankruptcy Court. Good, who was formerly a paper merchant, admitted liabilities of £7933, and assets nil. His only income is now the old-age pension and a few shillings a week from a friend and a charity. Mr F. VVard (for the trustee) examined Good, who said he knew a Mrs Catcheside, and had known her as a child. From time to. time he had made advances of money to her when she was left badly off, some years ago. He educated her sons and did everything for them. Mr Ward: What consideration has there been for the money advanced? —None, except friendship. Have you advanced her money or money's worth to the extent of £30,000?—No, I do not think it would be as much as that. , Good admitted that lie bought Mrs Catcheside a house and land in Tynemouth 15 years ago for about £ISOO, and gave her furniture, pictures, and silver. He had also given her a diamond and pearl necklace, which she later returned and he sold for '£soo. Did you give her rings and brooches worth £SOO each ? —No, they were worth about £l2O each. Did you give her £SOOO War Stock? —I gave her some, but I do not think as much as that. Good added that he treated her as a daughter (she was his wife's adopted daughter )and bouglit her dresses, and had given her two cars on different occasions. Did von give her shares in the "Yorkshire Post'' of the value of £1400?—I did. There was an agreement between himself and Mrs Catcheside (who he thought was now in Germany) _ that if his financial position became involved the gifts were to be returned. The examination was closed.
