THE WINTER SHOW.
OPENING TO-MORROW. SUCCESS~ASSURED. Though the weather, conditions have been, against good root and cereal crops in the past six months, it is anticipated that the exhibits in these, classes at the Ashburton Winter Show, which opens to-morrow morning, will be among the best that have previously been shown here. In other classes of exhibits the entries are said to be of a very high, order. Officials of the show have been working energetically toward a successful fixture, and it is believed the show will prove an even greater attraction to town and. country folk alike. A total of 1103 entries have been received for all classes, and in some of them there are large increases, the entries in thedog section, for instance, having advanced by 42 beyond those of last year. Among the animals to be shown are some that have recently been awarded champion titles in other shows, and many new dogs have been included. In -the produce and field roots classesthere has been a big drop, this being: a reflection from the dry conditions that prevailed at a when the greatest amount of moisture was needed. Nevertheless, it is said that some of the exhibits in these sections are of outstanding merit. Popularity seems to have returned to the canary and cage-birds section, as the entries there show an increase of over 200 per cent. While they are yet strong, the poultry section entries have dropped by about 50, this deficiency being amply compensated for in the increases; in both the domestic and needlework classes.
