TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the "Guardian," June 15, 1902.) Personal—AL-.ior W. St. George Douglas Assistant inspector of Post Offices far' the Midland district, and for many years postmasler here, visited Ashburton to-day. . Salvation Army.—Special services weie held in the Salvation Army Bar-* racks yesterday, and were conducted by Adiutant Burton, of Christchurch. Cadet Magridge sang an appropriate solo during the service. Mr R. Alcorn ablv officiated as chairman. Wreck of the Mawhera.—The steamship Mawhera (Union Company) was totally wrecked yesterday on a reef in tho Apatiki. Monster Eel.—The following are the dimensions of an eel caught by Mr Matthew Smith in the Domain this morning:—Length, 4ft. 3ins . girth, 18ins.; weight, 1/Jlbs. It was a • wamp eel, and was caught in the pipe between the baths and the middle lake. Prime Canterbury.—Canterbury mutton is now sold in London as follow: — Legs and loins, lOd per lb; forequarters 9d per lb, necks 7d per lb. Longbeach Road Board.—The Longbeach Road Board met on Saturday. Present: Messrs J. O. N. Grigg (chairman), Lill, Bishop, Body, and Stoddart The chairman stated the bank balance to be £656 lis lid. Debating Class at Allenton. —A meeting was held in the Allenton School last evening, for the purpose of forming a debating club. It was decided to call tho club the "Allenton Debating Class." The following committee was elected: Misses Hewson, Dent, J. Harris, Messrs Hewson, C Chapman, J. W. Malcolmson, and F. Rose. Mr Hewson was elected president, Mr C. Chapman vicenpresidentt, and Mr J. Smith secretary and treasurer.
