THE MENSAHIB CASE.

OWNER'S APPEAL SUCCESSFUL. JOOKEr DISQUALIFIED. AUCKLAND, June 7. The Auckland District Committee met this afternoon to hear two appeals. On Saturday, Mr Mervyn. Wells, the owner of Memsahib, was disqualified for 12 months by the- stewards of the Auckland Racing Club after an inquiry concerning the running of Memsahib in the Hunt Club Cup, the stewards being of the opinion tliat Memsahib was not run to win. It was further resolved that W. Reid, the rider of Memsahib, be disqualified for 12 months under Rule 1, Part 25, Rules of Racing, which gives stewards the right to disqualify a jockey if, in their opinion, a horse has nOt been run on its merits. It was against these decisions that to-day's appeals were heard. The appeal of the owner, Mr Mervyn Wells, wn« successful, but that of the jockey, W. Reid, was dismissed. The disqualification of Mr Mervyn Wells on Saturday had far-reaching effects/ as his horse. Wedding March, winner of the Great Northern Hurdle Handicap, was prevented from starting in the Great Northern Steeplechase, fox which he was one of the popular fancies. Now that his appeal has been upheld, Mr Wells has a grievance, which is accentuated by the fact that Wedding March was not handicapped for his third day engagements.
