PERSONAL.

Mr It. Kennedy was yesterday* appointed solicitor to the County Council, in succession to the late Mr €. \V. Purnell.

It is understood that Lieutenant W. H Osborne, who has been conductor of' the Ashburton Band since 1920, has accepted a position as conductor to an A grade band, and will leave Ashburton ahout the middle of June.

Successful Ashburton competitors in the Christchurch competitions yesterday were:—Mrs H. B. Naylor, Ist equal, 96 points sacred solo far contralto; Miss E. Thompson second, 11 d points, musical monologue (ladies), and third, 76 points, play reading, with Mr Bert Goodland (New Brighton!: Messrs H Clemo, J. Corbett, W. Corbett and E.’ Hopwood, first, 96 points, male voice quartette.

The examiner for the Board of the R.A.M. and R.C.M. this year will be Mr H. C. C. Moule M.A., ‘Mus. Bac., Cantab, son of a former president of Corpus Christi College. He was born at Cambridge, and educated at Marlborough College and at Trinity College, Cambridge. He received his musical education under the late Professor Charles Wood, Professor Dent and Dr. Rootham. Mr Moule is a member of the University Faculty Board for Music, and one of the Professors at the Royal College of Music. He has not previously visited New Zealand.

A large number of the members of the St. Stephen’s Guild met at St. Stephen’s Hall yesterday afternoon to bid farewell to Mrs T. J Hunter, who has been a member of the Guild for Id years and who has, at different tunes during that period, filled the offices of president and secretary. Mrs Hunter was presented with an oak cake-stand and .plates, by Mrs E. rJNewton, who referred to the recipient as a very active member, and these sentiments were endorsed by Mesdames C. McEachen, R. Galbraith, E. Ruddock, and the vicar (Rev. J. F. Wiseman). During the afternoon musical items were given by Mesdames E. Hayman, E. Ruddock, N. C. Jones and Muir.
