LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Ashburton Amateur Cycling and Athletic Club's meeting, which was to have been held on the Domain Oval last evening, was postponed owing to the inclemency of the weather. Those competitors who did attend indulged in a short practice.
On a charge of not having sufficient lawful means of support, Archibald John Templeman, of Ashburton, appeared before Mr E. F. Nicoll, J.P., at the Magistrate's Court. Templeman was remanded to appear bofore the Magistrate to-morrow, an application for bail being refused.
The excursion trip to the Otira Gorge, which was cancelled two weeks ago on account of a wash-out on the Midland line, after the train (with 240 passengers) had reached Dromore, will be run on Saturday, the train leaving Ashburton at 7.15 o'clock. This excursion is claimed to be one of the finest one-day holidays conducted by the Railway Department.
There was a good attendance at the fortnightly meeting of the Daphne (Rebekah) Lodge, Kb. 34, 1.0.0. F., last evening, when the N.G-. (Sister J. Mcintosh) presided. P.G. Sister B. Coward and N.G. Sister Mcintosh were appointed a visiting committee. Two candidates were initiated into the Order. At the conclusion of the Lodge meeting, a social hour was conducted, supper being supplied by the Sisters.
At a meeting of the Ashburton Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Society there were present:—Messrs W. H. Robinson (chairman), S. H. Webb, J. Reeves, B. Bushell, B. Kelly, J. Cox, G. Bundy, S. Beauvais, T. Rattray, W. Tulloeh, and F. Beauvais. A motion of sympathy was passed with the chairman in his recent bereavement. Messrs Clark, Bushell and Cox were appointed to revise the root section of the schedule. The matter of interviewing ladies interested in the cooking and needlework section, with a view to revision, was left in the hands of the chairman.
Smashed to matchwood, a motor car belonging to Mr Sydney Ernest Chappell was completely wrecked at Mount Eden, Auckland, yesterday afternoon, when it was lifted away from the front of a tram car that was bound for the city. The accident had occurred through Mr Chappell failing to notice the tram car. It was raining heavily at the time, and his windscreen was blurred. The car was struck broadside on by the tram, and Mr Joseph Chappell, who was with the driver, had one of his hands badly lacerated.
Asked whether the special express services recently inaugurated by the Railway Department had been a success, Mr R. S. Kent, Divisional Superintendent at Christchurch, said the result had not yet been summed up from the financial returns. The prospects i on the Christchurch-Ashburton service were encouraging, and the Parnassus express was doing well. There was no intention at present to reduce the special express service, and for the winter time-table only some of the express trains to the south would be cancelled. Speeds would not be reduced.
The monthly meeting of the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade was held last evening in the fire station, Superintendent T. Barber presiding over a full attendance. Notice was received from the Borough Council that the Brigade was not to attend any fires in Allenton. Superintendent Barber presented his report on the conference held at Gisborne recently. Tho sum of £2 2s was donated to an appeal from the Whangarei Fire Brigade on behalf of a member who had died leaving a wife and 10 children. It was decided to write thanking Dr. Mullin for hi 9 services as honorary surgeon to the brigade. Mr P. E. Butler was elected a. member. Resignations were received from Messrs W. Furniss and J. (Dobbin.
