TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the "Guardian," Mar. 29, 1002.) Good Yields—Mr Joshua Tucker, of Allenton, has just threshed a ten-acre paddock of cats, from which he has taken 1080 bushels, or an average ol 108 bushels to the acre. Mr ' John Parker, of the Beach Road, had a yield of GOl bushels from six acres, or a littlo over 100 bushels to the acre. Southern Cross Football Club—The annual meeting of the Southern Cross Football Club was held last evening, when there was a large attendance. The election of officers resulted:— Patron, Mr John McLauchlan; president, Mr William Patching; vice-presi-dents, Messrs Andrew Orr, T. F. Gibson, H. A. Humphreys, G. Colman, I). Thomas, C. N6rthcote and W. H. Collins; captain, Mr S. Culverhouso; vice-captain, Mr R. Hodgson; secretary and treasurer, Mr F. H. Choat. Welcome to Returned Troopers. —In spite of the inclement weather there were over 30 persons present at the Greenstreet School on Friday evening to take part in the welcome home to Troopers C. E. and W. Gray, who have recently returned from South Africa after a year's absence. Mr John Stewart (chairman of the school committee) presided. In presenting each of the troopers with a. gold medal, subscribed for by the residents of the district, Mr W. Gilmour, of Dunsandel, eulogised the work done by the troops in South Africa, and expressed pleasure at seeing their guests safe and sound. The medals bore the following inscription:—"To Trooper Gray, from Greenstreet friends for service in South Africa. March 21, 1902." Banquet to Mr H. Friedlander. —A very representative gathering of gentlemen from all Darts of the district assembled at the Commercial Hotel last evening to do honour to Mr Hugo Friedlander, prior to his departure for an extended trin to Europe. The Mavor (Mr W. H. Collins) nresided, and others present included the chairman of the County Council (Mr C. J. Harper), Dr. Trevor, and Messrs T>. Thomas, T. E. "Unton, T. F. Gibson and C. Dohertv. The chairman, in proposing the toast of "The Guest of the Evening." said that Mr Friedlander had done a great deal of good for the district, and had filled all the Richest at the disoosal of the people, and had he aspired to the position of their representative he would no doubt have gained that position too. .Mr Friedlander suitablv responded. A number of enjoyable items were contributed during the evening.
