INFLUENZA.
PRECAUTIONS BY GOVERNMENT. MINISTER’S STATEMENT. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 21. A lengthy statement issued by the Hon. J. A. Young (Minister of Health) to-day, regarding influenza, states that port health officers have been instructed to adopt vigorous inspection of all ships from overseas, particularly from Europe and withhold pratique in case of ships arriving with influenza aboard or a, history of an epidemic of influenza at an earlier stage of the voyage. Medical officers of health have been instructed to satisfy themselves that quarantine stations are able to be opened up at a moment’s notice to accommodate as required a.nd also satisfy themselves that local organisations are in readiness to cope with any outbreaks which may occur within New Zealand. The Department and public are better organised to-day than at any time < before to deal with an epidemic. Official advice received as to the nature- and course of the epidemic in Europe is bv no means so alarming as the cabled news in the papers.
LOCAL BODIES CONFER. WELLINGTON, January 21. A meeting of the Mayors of Wellington- and nearby boroughs and chairmen of adjoining local bodies and other institutions in AA’ellington district, is to be held on Thursday, at the suggestiqn of the Department of Health, to discuss means by which the Wellington area may be placed in a state_ of preparedness should the influenza epidemic reach New 1 Zealand.
