CANTERBURY ROADS.
CONDEMNED BY MOTORISTS. (Per Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH,. This Day. Tourists wlio came to Canterbury" for the Christmas holidays have no words harsh enough to express theirfeelings regarding many of the main roads from the Rakaia northwards. The main stream of traffic south had to go by way of th© Ellesmere bridge, because the Selwyn was unfordable, and although this road is had and! rough in parts, it is, on the whole, very much better than the average of the Canterbury main roads. The Main South Road beyond Hornby is rough and uneven, covered with thick, coarse, loose sliingle, which makes driving in various places a nightmare. The Bealey Road is as <( dreadful,” the North Canterbury: main travel roads being almost invariably bad. _ North Island visitors, who used toe regard Canterbury as the motorist s : paradise, now say this is the worst province in New Zealand as far as roads are concerned. South of the Rakaia River the mam roads are, on the whole, in fine condition.
