THE BOROUGH SCHOOL

DECISIONS OF COMMITTEE. The Borough School Committee met last evening, when there were present: Messrs John Watson (chairman)., J. McElhinney, L. J. Watt, A. Bushell, J. Wilson, E. Coker, and W. H- Woods. The Ashburton branch of the Canterbury Automobile Association wrote that it was erecting "go slow" signs outside the various schools in the County, and enquired if the Committee would erect some if they were provided. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman and Mr W. H. Woods to arrange.. The Borough Council wrote that it had been decided to extend the time for free water for the swimming baths to March 31, 1927. The secretary was instructed to write and thank the council for its favourable consideration of the matter. The resignation 'of Mr B. Dickinson as caretaker of the school was accepted with regret. It was decided to write thanking him for his work at the school.

The headmaster (Mr M. Boyee) reported that the school re-opened on February 1, when 37 new pupils were enrolled. At the end of the year 34 boys, alid 35 girls were withdrawn, 18 leaving the district. The balance were Standard VI. pupils, of whom 43 are at secondary schools. The roll number was 220 boys and 222 girls. The average attendance was 413 or 93 per c cut. Mr A. Gourley had commenced in place of Mr Grieve and Miss E. Bell had also joined the staff. Three probationers —Misses D. Knox, C. Heenan and P. Taylor had also been appointed. A Junior National scholarship- had been won at the end of the year by Charles Innes. A First Aid outfit was necessary for the school.

The report was adopted, the matter of procuring the First Aid outfit being left in the hands of the chairman.
