MEETING OF THE COUNCIL.

The .Ashburton Borough Council met last evening, when the Deputy-Mayoi m r W H. Woods! presided. iheie were also present the following councillors: Messrs J. W. Bowden. S\ G. Hillier, F. W. Seldom J. The financial statement -showed that £lll 5s had been received since last I'll IT P 1 * - A letter was received from the Associated Chambers of Commerce drawing attention to a resolution passed by that body in reference to the growth of local body borrowing.— The letter was received. . , . The Inspector of Explosives forwarded a circular dealing with the bulk system of petrol distribution, stating that the department was in favour of underground tanks, for Bowser pumps on the' sides of the streets. . Mr Kerr said that with the installation of tanks under the footpaths, there would-be a danger of the pipes being damaged when workmen were laying or taking up pipes and it was decided that the Gas Company be asked to notify the Town Clerk when streets and footways are to be broken np by its workmen. The Ashburton branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was granted permission to conduct a street stall on Friday, February 26. In response to a petition signed by 4S representative firms, the council decided to ask all townspeople to observe March 6 as a holiday, being the date of the Trades’ Picnic. The Foreman of Works (Mr 1. Gibson) reported that during the past two weeks the usual routine work had been done and asphalt had been laid and rolled in Burnett Street.—The report was received. • .r . . Accounts totalling £1486 12s Sd were parsed for payment.
