SATURDAY'S GAMES. Two tennis matches were decided on Saturday, but only one, that between Tinwald No. 1 and Ashburton No. 1 Junior teams, was a competition game. A friendly game was played between the Te Marae A and B Senior teams. Tinwald beat Ashburton by 10 sets 111 games to six sets 107 games. I CYCLING.

ALLENTON ROAD RACE. The Ashburton Amater Cycling and Athletic Club held a 14£ mile cycle road race round the Allenton Block on Saturday evening, when'l7 riders faced the starter. A large crowd assembled to witness the race, the finish of which was very exciting. The result was as follows: W. Parkes (3£min.) 1 H. Weston (4min.) 2 H. C'avill (4min.) 3 W. Watson (4min.) ' 4 Fastest time was obtained by R. Wood, who rode the. race in 25mm. 57sec. The winner's time was 26nnn. 30sec.

BOWLING.

THE ASHBURTON CLUB.There - ' was a good attendance at the Ashburton Bowling Club's green on Saturday, when one of the championship rink matches was played, in addition to a number of friendly club games.

RIFLE SHOOTING.

ASHBURTON DEFENCE CLUB. A match of ten shots at 300 and 500 yards was fired by the Ashburton Defence Rifle Club on Saturday. Conditions were good for shooting, and some good scores were registered J. WELLINGTON. February 14. The results of the Imperial Challenge Shield rifle competition and the competition for the Earl Jflncoe trophy have boon announced by LoloneJ W. L. H. Burgess, Chief of the General Staff. „ , _ ... The winner of the Earl Jellicoe trophy was No. 89 Company, New Plymouth Technical College Cadets, with a score of 50.864. The same comnany was successful in the Imperial Challenge Shield senior competition, and tb Q iunior competition was won by C Company, Ist (Cadet) Battalion, Otago Regiment. The Dunodin Technical High School Cadets, with a score of 43.425. were the winners of the National Rifle 'Association's bronze modal. It is also announced that 91 teams competed in the competition for the Kind's trophy. They made a total H r.„ve Vf 139,214, the ' figure of merit being 69.295.'

BOXiNG.

DRAWN MATCH IN BERLIN. BERLIN, February 14. A ten rounds boxing contest between Paoline and Franz Diener (German) was drawn. Fifteen thousand spectators watched the fight, in which Dieper's superior ringcraft counterbalanced the force of Paoline'6 blows. Both took merciless punishment unflinchingly. UREN DEFEATS HALL. SYDNEY, February 14. At the Stadium, Havilah Uren defeated Joe Hall, the latter being disqualified for delivering a low punch in the second round.

RUGBY.

LONDON, February 14. Playing Rugby at Dublin, Ireland beat England by 19 points to 15. At Belfast, playing Soccer, Ireland beat Wales, 3-0.

SWIMMING

GRIER'S PROTEST,

ADELAIDE, February 13. In connection with Grier's protest in the 100" yards swimming championship of Australia, the referee decided that the race must be re-swum, and his decision was endorsed by the governing body.

Reg. Crier is the Queensland champion. He made his first appearance in championships last year, when, at the age of 19, he won State and national championships. He won the Australian quarter-mile title in smin 37 4-5 sec. This year, at the Perth section of the Australian championships, he brought off a surprise by winning the 220 yards title in 2min 30 2-ssec.

AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

ADELAIDE, February 14

The three-quarter- mile swimming championship of Australia resulted as follows: —Christie (New South Wales) 1, Jones (West Australia) 2, Cormac (Victoria) 3. Time, 18min 3sec.
