ORGANISED THRIFT.
SUCCESS IN BRITAIN. Popular investment in national savings certificates, which was organised in Britain as part of the war effort, lias become a permanent patriotic movement, maintained and conducted by voluntary organisations, at, the head of which is Lord Islington, formerly Governor-General of New Zealand. Addressing a recent conference in London, Mr Walter Guinness, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, said that £372,(XX),000 was invested in the original payments of those who had bought certificates, apart from the accrued interest, which, in effect, had been reinvested in that security. The movement was going from strength to strength, and the slight setback last year bad been completely wiped out. In the first nine months of this year, 35,500,(XX) certificates had been issued, as against 24,700,000 in the corresponding period last year. When one considered the appalling conditions through which the trade of the country bad been going, it was marvellous that the movement should have been able to increase its results in that way. It was evidence of a real awakening ol national feeling to the importance ol savin' l- . Not onlv did they find tins evidence in the national savings movement, but also in the improvement m other forms of saving, such as the Post Office Savings Bank and the Trustees Savings Bank. I rom the Treasury point of view, tlie sayings movement had become a wry considerable resource in their national finance. The number of certificates taken was increasing at the rate 0-1 10 + , every week, so that the level of Diet reservoir was constantly and definitely rising 01 The social effect of the spread of the movement was of even grewtei value than the financial results.
