MAN SERIOUSLY WOUNDED. (Per Press Association.) IN VEK CAPGILL, This Day. A young married man, Mr Victor Pausing, who was spending a holiday at Mataura, while rabbit shooting, was accidentally shot with a pea-rifle by a youth, Len Hardie. The victim was removed to the hospital with a wound in his skull. His condition is grave. MAORI CHILD DROWNED. WANGANUI, Dec. 29. A Maori called at the Police Station this afternoon, and reported that a halfcaste child named Hyland had been drowned in a bucket of water at a pah up the liver. The police have gone out to investigate.

RACING CYCLISTS INJURED. DTTNEDIN, Dec. 29. Competing in the mile professional cycle championship on the Caledonian ground this afternoon, Clarence Parker (New Plymouth), aged 19, and John Henderson (Christchurch), aged 22, met with serious injuries through falling from their bicycles. Parker is suffering from injuries to his back and shoulder, while Henderson has injuries to his stomach and hip. The men were admitted to the hospital for treatment. It was reported to-night that the injuries to both men were not likely to prove serious.

POISON MISTAKEN FOB MEDICINE ONE MAN "SUCCUMBS. WANGANUI, Dec. 29. After spending Christmas Day and Boxing Day in the city, two men employed on Mr C. Connor’s farm at Raorikia, 15 miles up the Wanganui River, returned home. As they were suffering from headaches, they looked round for medicine, and found powders in an old waistcoat pocket. This, they agreed, was what they wanted, but it turned out to be strychnine. One man, Mr William Davis, a widower with two children, succumbed within a minute, and the other, Mr Thomas McGuire, was admitted to the hospital. His condition is not considered to be dangerous.

At the inquest on William Davis, who died on Thursday through taking strychnine in mistake for aspirin, it was disclosed that deceased and his mate, Thomas McGuire, were suffering from the after-effects of liquor, and were in a had way. They had already drunk the contents of a gallon jar of yeast, and were searching for something to relieve them when thev found a bottle of strychnine in the vest pocket of the acting-manager of Mr Connors, a farmer at Raorikia. The latter carried' it about with him for safety, having taken it over from the .previous manager, who left before Christmas. McGuire is making a comparatively good recovery. The actingmanager liberally dosed him with salt and water until a doctor arrived.
