COAL FOR REFRIGERATORS. QUESTION OF INTERFERENCE. QUEENSLAND AND COMMONWEALTH. (Per Press Association— Copyright.) (Received This Day, 10.30 a.m.) BRISBANE, This Day The State Premier (Mr McCormack) has received a telegram from Mr Bruce asking him to see that the delayed vessels are supplied with coal for tlie refrigerators and to give an assurance that the vessels will not be subjected to lawless interference. Mr MoCormick replied that there was no evidence of any unlawful interference and no disturbance was anticipated. The Queensland Government would maintain law and order in a constitutional manner without any outside interference or suggestion from tlie Commonwealth Government. NESTOR DISCHARGING AT SYDNEY
CREW ESCORTED ABOARD. SYDNEY, October 23. "The chief item of strike interest today was tlie arrival by train from Melbourne of 15 of the 16 members of the crew of the steamer Nestor, who struck there. They were met at Sydney by a squad of special police and escorted aboard the Nestor. _ Wharf labourers are now engaged in discharging the Nestor's cargo.. Jt is announced that the Diogenes, which yas yesterday reported as not calling at Melbourne, will call there. It is unofficially announced that tho Overseas Shipping Representatives' Association has evolved a scheme for overcoming the Seamen's Union ukase for preventing the coaling of vessels.
VOLUNTEERS' BEDDING DESTROYED. JOB CONTROL ALLEGED. MELBOURNE, October 23. Incensed by a report that a volunteer crew had been smuggled aboard the steamer Euripides, 30 strikers dumped a lorry-load of mattresses for the liner into tlio Yarra'and decambed. The lorry driver recovered the bedding in a damaged condition. The steamer Werribee is tied up at Geelong. The owners allege job control has been attempted by the seamen, and have decided to pay off the crew. The trouble arose through an engineer discharging a fireman. The fireman considered that this was unwarranted and tlie Seamen's Union refused to fill the vacancy. The crew decided not to sail until the man was reinstated.
A VOCAL DEMONSTRATION. RECRUITING AT MELBOURNE. | (Received This Day, 10.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. With the object of inducing the remainder of the crew of the Ceramic to join the strike, 400 strikers marched to the steamer's side. Reinforcements of police were rushed to the scene, but the strikers made no attempt to board the steamer, and .after yelling intermittently for several hours they dispersed without attaining their objective. LAST OF THE DELAYED SHIPS. DEPARTURE FROM AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, October 24. The Zinal, last of the ships affected bv the strike at this port, sailed today for Nauru Island. The men who replaced the strikers signed on at the rates offered under the British articles, no special inducement being offered by the owners.
