HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.
TSiSz MONTHLY MEETING. LIFE-SAVING TEAM’S SUCCESS. The High School Board held its adjourned monthly meeting this morning, when there were present: Messrs J. VY. Bowden (chairman), R. Galbraith, A. Lane, \V. T. Lill, F. Frampton, J. Brown. An apology for absence was reoedved from Mr R. Kennedy. - The linanciaJ. statement showed a debit on the loan account ot There was a credit of £lO 8s lOd in the general account. . The headmaster (Mr W. F. Watters) reported that the roll-number was 200 Cm boys and 93 girls) The average attendance for the month was 189, or 94.75 per oent. Of seven pupils who sat for the recent teachers examinations, six were successful The schoo life-saving team won the Petersen Cup for. competition among the secondary schools of Canterbury and the winning of the trophy by a school which did not have the use of tepid baths reflected l great credit on both the instructors l and the boys. One of the lawnmowers | was beyond repair and another was urI gently needed. Mr Scott (school archi- | tect) had recefitly inspected the desks recommended by the Department and * bad come to the conclusion that they were not suitable because of their size. The purchase of a new lawnmower was left to the chairman and headmaster to arrange. The question of desks was held oyer, ihe school lifesaving team and its instructors were congratulated on winning the Petersen Oup. • , The Education Department wrote informing the Board that it was liable for special rates struck on property prior to its being purchased for school purposes. The Board was not liable tor special rates struck after the property bad been acquired for school purposes. The Rev. A. G. Irvine, as supervisor of the forthcoming matriculation examinations, applied for the use of the assembly hall for the examinations Permission was granted The request of the Senior Inspector for the use ot the hall for the Public Service examinations was also granted. , n , Mr Henry Skey, of the Magnetic Observatory, Christchurch, wrote stating be was pleased to see the Board was going to use the telescope donated by Mrs Ferriman. He would be glad to be ot service in arranging for a suitable place in which to house it. The question ot erecting the telescope was deferred, pending an estimate of the cost being The resignation of Miss H. N. Porter from the teaching staff, as f r ?™ February 1, 1926, was accepted with The secretary was instructed to write , to the Education Department asking permission to purchase scenic views of places of interest in New Zealand. On the motion of Mr Brown, it was decided to thank the A. and P. Association for arranging for the school pupils to be present at the recent stock demonstrations. , Accounts amounting to £73 18s 8d were passed for payment.
