CONTEMPT OF COURT CASES
CHARGES AGAINST NEWSPAPERS. APPEAL COURT JUDGMENT. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Appeal Court gave judgment to-day in the contempt of court cases against the Christchurch “ Sun” and “ Star” for publishing in the newspapers in August last certain matter in relation to one Lucy Prosser, witness in the Mouat case, calculated to prejudice or interfere with the due administration, of justice. The case against the latter was unanimously dismissed on the ground that it merely reported what actually took place in the Court, and that such report was privileged. In the case of the “ Sun” the Court was divided, the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) and Mr Justice Ostler holding that the charge should bo dismissed, while Mr Justice Reed, Mr Justice Sim, and Mi [Justice Ad'ams were of opinion that the paragraph contained obvious comment that the witness was biased. As counsel had expressed regret, the case would bo met by payment of cos s, 15 guineas, and disbursemnts. No costs were allowed in the “Star” case.
