LOOKING BACK.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From tho “Guardian,” Oct. 23, 1900). Shooting.—The following are the names of the Rifles’ team in the match versus the Ashburton Mounted Rifles at Lagmhor:—Captain W. E. Dolman, Lieutenant A. Clarke, Sergeant G. Willers, Corporals T. Lcitch, J • W ■ Baker, and B. Baker, Privates J. 'Clayton, W. Nicholl, J. Hillgrove, F. 1 otter, W. Hodgson, and G. Parsons. Emergencies: Privates R. Minms, W. Fifleld and bugler B. Simpson. Tennis Trophies.— The 1 r °sident of
the Ashburton Lawn Tennis Club (Mr O. W. Purnell) has presented a handsome solid silver card case ror the ladies competitions and a cigarette case for tho men. Considerable rivalry exists with respect to the iiltimate possession of these valuable gifts. The vice-President (Mr Alfred Harrison) has presented a fine tennis racquet for comPe Angling.—Very good sport has been obtained in the Rangitata in the last few days. rOno of tlio best baskets was secured by Mr T. Washington of Orakipaoa. His take of 11 included one of 81bs., one of 71bs., and four of slbs. each. Tho fish were all clean run, but were not in the best of condition. Mr Boyd Thompson, the veteran angler or the Rangitata, says that the fish in the river are gaining in condition rapidly i and tho river is likely to yield better results than for some years past. A Midnight Lie. —The clock on the Borough Chambers, our town clock we may call it, announced that it was two a.m. this morning, when it was only midnight. One or two late wanderers were consequently afraid to return Growth.—We have been favoured with a sample of rhubarb grown bv Mr Janies Elliott, coal merchant, in his garden. The stalks are 6 inches in circumference and four feet long measured from the root to the tip or the leaves and when growing resemble an umbrella opened out. This is only another evidence of the prolific growth of the season, as Mr Elliott has in no way forced tho plants.
