HEROIC RESCUE AT SEA.

DAMAGED in a hurricane. ITALIAN SHIP ABANDONED. OIL USED TO SMOOTH SEAS. (Per Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 1.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, October 21. , The Italian freight steamer Ignazio Florio was abandoned sinking when 27 of the crew were removed after an amazing rescue by the steamer President Harding. The latter stood by all night, unable to assist because of high seas and a hurricane. These moderated sufficiently in the morning, however, to allow lifeboats to approach the derelict, oil being used to smooth the seas. All the Florio’s lifeboats were smashed and the rudder torn away.
