At Ohakune yesterday F. Perfect, bootmaker, was lined £SO for failing to give a satisfactory account of the disposal of a largo quantity of liquor. Nigger Minstrel was scratched at 10.50 a.m. to-day for all engagements at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting, and also for the Wellington meeting, says a Press Association message. The tender of the Precision Engineering Company, Wellington, has been accepted by the Government foi I the supply of name-plates for motorears. The price of the tender has not been disclosed. Polls are being taken in 'Christchurch to-day in connection with the proposals to raise a special loan of £25,000 foi the purpose of erecting an Art Gallery in Christchurch, and a loan of £12,0U0 for improving and enlarging the city abattoirs at Sockburn. In a bogey handicap match in connection with the ladies’ golf championship at Wellington, Mrs Guy Williams went round in 78 —a record 1 for the course. Mrs E. G. Kerr (Timaru) won the long driving contest, with 19/ yards 2 feet, and also won the aggregate tor three drives.

Two keas were shot in the vicinity of Nelson recently (says'the Mail ). Mr T. W r . Anderson, of Wakapuaka Road, heard , the birds making an unusual sound in his property, ana secured a gun and shot them. It is very unusual to see such birds in close proximity to the town. There was no evidence that they had been attacking sheep or lambs.

The first prize ticket in the All Gold Art Union, valued at £2OOO, is shared between Messrs W. R. Brown and George Davidson, of Dunedin. A mistaken impression was conveyed by a telegram from Auckland last week to the effect that the opening of the New Zealand Baptist Theological College, of which the Rev. J. J. North is to be first principal, is delayed a year. The opening was delayed from IJ2o to 1926, and all arrangements have been made for the opening in March next. A maximum number of students has been enrolled.

The maximum load at the Lake Coleridge power station continues to decrease on account of the fine weather experienced lately. Last week the peak load was 12,050 k.w. (previous week 12,250 k.w.), recorded between 7 and 7.30 p.m. on Friday. The lake level continues to fall slightly, and on Sunday was at 1670.6 ft, compared with 1670.7 ft the previous week. The average inflow from the Harper River during the week was 20 cusecs, a slight increase on the previous week.

The Band of the First (Canterbury) Mounted Rifles, under Lieutenant W. H. Osborne, visited the County Hospital last evening and wave an enjoyable open-air concert. The Matron (Miss Watt) thanked the bandsmen at the conclusion of the programme, which was as follows:—March, “Cavalry of the Clouds”; selection, “Coonland ; cornet solo, “Black Dike,” bv Lieutenant Osborne; hymn, “Remington’ ; popular waltzes, “Colorado” and “When Lights are Low”: march, “Wellington.”

The gift afternoon held in St. Stephen’s Parish Hall yesterday afternoon in aid of the funds of the Women’s Guild was well attended. Miss M. Ruddock presided. A large number of useful gifts for the variety stall at the garden party to be held at Mrs Henry Stephenson’s residence in December were collected. Musical items were given by Mesdames H. Naylor, A. T. Smith, R. Stephenson, and McDonald, Misses G. Galbraith and M. Jennings playing the accompaniments.

Now that the wintry weather is a thing of' the past, the countryside presents a fresh, inviting appearance, and during the last week a touch of bright colour lias been provided by the bloom of the fruit trees. Suburban gardens are looking very attractive, a noteworthy example being the orchard of Mr Henry Stephenson at Allenton, where some 50 well-kept apple trees neatly laid out are displaying a wealth of bloom, which with the dark Teen lawn below presents a delightful picture. The Domain is looking very well for the Gala on Monday, with the borders cleaned and the lawns neatly clipped.

Residents of Eiffelton are notified that Mr R. Galbraith’s meeting advertised to, be held on Friday has been postponed to Wednesday next, October 28. Mr Galbraith will address the electors in the Waterton Hall tomorrow (Friday) evening, and, as time is limited, settlers in the Ashburton, Flemington, and Longheach districts are asked to attend this meeting.— (Advt.)

As a wind-up to the winter season of socials, the Aiienton Sports Club hold a most successful dance m the School last evening, when there were about 40 couples present. Mr H. Thompson supplied the music, Mr L. Rowland acting as M.C.

The fusing of an underground electric cable followed by twe explosions caused excitement in Queen Street, Auckland, at a busy hour last night. The fusing was followed by a fire beneath the pavement. The girls in adjacent shops, thinking the building was on fire, broke a plate-glass window, and made their escape with a few cuts. All suffered from shock. The damage to the cable was soon repaired.

Tho Hinds Hall was well filled when a concert in aid of the produce stall of the Catholic bazaar was held. Mr M. Farrell occupied the chair. A good programme was submitted and thoroughly enjoyed, as follows: Selections on the bagpipes, Mr Wilson; pianoforte items, Misses Meeking; O’Grady, Mulvey, and' Farrell, and Mr Tilby; songs, blisses K. Burgess, I. Hampton, Mrs Naylor, Mrs Cullen, Messrs M. Farrell, Russell, and McDonald ; stepdancing, Miss Gladys Bushell. At the conclusion Dean O’Donnell thanked all who had helped to make the concert a success. Supper was then handed round. A dance followed.
