NEW ZEALAND SWEEP
PROMOTER FINED £IOO. ' £37,000 WORTH OF TICKETS. NO DRAWING ARRANGEMENTS. (Per Press Association —Copyright.) (Received This Day, 9.35 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Richard Abbott, alias Rex Freeman, an agent, pleaded guilty to being the occupier of a room used for the purpose of receiving money relating to the “New Zealand Sweepstake.” The police gave evidence that 15,000 hooks of tickets were printed, each book containing eleven five-shilling tickets, which would return to the promotors about £37,500. The prizes totalled about £IO,OOO, hut no arrangements had been made for drawing the sweep. Defendant gave evidence that the promoters had kept a record of eveiy person who had sent money for the tickets, and now tlte matter was nipped in the bud steps would be taken to refund the money. The bulk of the money had been sent back to New Zealand.
' Abbott was fined £IOO. *■ Phillip Lussich, a printer, was fined £2O for printing tickets without attaching thereto liis name and place of abode.
