RUGBY FOOTBALL. WAIBARAPA BEAT CANTERBURY. MASTERTON, August 12. In fine weather and on a dry ground, Wairarapa defeated the Canterbury touring representatives by 14 points to 12. Wairarapa had the better of the play, especially in the second spell, when the home forwards surged through the Southerners' pack and gained many advantages for their backs. The latter operated consistently, and only the resolute defence of the Canterbury backs kept the score down. Canterbury's combination was faulty, and mishandling cost them several points in the first spell. In the second session, when the Wairarapa forwards took charge, they lost their commanding lead and were unable- to retrieve their fallen position. Nixon placed the visitors six points up with two splendid penalty goals. Then Ford, with a beautiful dummy, scored in the corner. Nixon failed to goal. Garland scored for Wairarapa, and F. Booth converted. The score at half-time was 9-5 in favour of Canterbury. A runaway try by Talbot early m the second spell put the visitors further ahead, but the inconsistent Wairarapa team rose brilliantly to the occasion. Tries by Cundy, F. Booth, and R. Booth the last shortly before time, gained them a well-merited victory.
