TOWN V. COUNTRY

THE EDUCATION BOARD. TROUBLE OVER COMMITTEES. (Per Press Association.) OHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Allegations that country members were working against town members of the Education Board in order to gain the chairmanship of the standing committees were made at the special meeting of the board yesterday, when a new chairman and new standing committees were elected. Mr E. H. Andrews said- that other members of the board had been "buttonholed" and canvassed for votes tor certain men. "It is about time this stopped—everybody knows it goes on, said Mr Andrews. The trouble started when Mr VV. r. Spencer was nominated chairman or the Building Committee "Is that a joke?" asked Mr WinThe committee was elected with Mr H. J. Bignell as chairman. Mr Winsor: I resign. I refuse to act on the committee—l like fair play. I shall be able to do more good as a critic. I'm doing this as a. protest against the feeling between town and country. _' ■ , . - The chairman (Mr T. Hughes): I think you're out of order, Mr Winsor. "I never say a thing unless I mean it't was Mr Winsor's reply. Mr Andrews said it was no U6e the board turning a blind eye to the matter It was well known that members were approached and buttonholed before the election of chairmen. He had been approached and h«e knew that other members had been, too. The same thing happened each year. When the chairman of the finance Committee came to be elected both Mr C. S. Thompson and Mr G. W. Armitage were nominated. In the ballot Mr Armitage was elected by 6 votes to 4. Mr Thompson: I now refuse to act on the Building and Finance Committees. It is obvious that the town v. country feeling has crept into the board.
