THREE YEARS' HARD LABOUR

POSTAL DOCUMENTS FORGED. OFFENCES AT FAIRLIE. TlltfAßU, This Day. The re-trial of James Murray on charges of forgery of postal documents and the theft of, £2OO, the property of J. R. Macdonald, was concluded at the i Supreme Court yesterday before Mr Justice Sim. After further evidence had been heard the jury returned with a verdict of gualty, but recommended accused to leniency on account i of the laxity in the Post Office at Fairlie.

His Honour said the police report gave accused a bad character. He had always lived beyond his means, taking his friends down. If the police report was true, Murray was an unmitigated rogue. Accused was sentenced to three years' imprisonment with hard labour, sentence to cover the present charges I and those on which he was convicted I on Tuesday (namely, the theft of three i sums of money the property of the New Zealand Government). His Honour added that the accused could apneal to the Prisons Board, but he hoped the Board would have the police report before them so that it could properly judge the character of the man it was dealing with.
