TANKS CAUSE A PANIC.
RIFFS RAISE A SIEGE. TURKS ASSIST KRIM. (Per Press Association—Copyright.) LONDON, July 23. The Paris correspondent of the "Dai}y Chronicle" states that the Riffs have suffered a severe set-back. The French have relieved a post at Ainmaatouff, 50 miles north of Fez, after a siege lasting five weeks, in which aeroplanes supplied the garrison of 500 with ice, medicine, and even ammunition, which was dropped at the Sorb. Half the garrison wpsi killed or wounded before relief was effected. The commander, Major Richard, was shot through both legs when the defence was repelling a night attack. He directed the final stages of the defence from a. stretcher, encouraging his men to fight to the end. French tanks .created a panic among the Riff sharpshooters when they found that tank armour was impervious to their bullets. Thirty other tanks have been landed at Casa Blanca. The Madrid newspapers publish disquieting dispatches from Fez, reporting that the enemy forces are entrenched between Arbastisza and Ainaicha, preventing the provisioning of the Spanish posts, which, however, are holding out despite pressure. A number of Turkish colonels, formerly with the German Army, are as.sisting Abd-el-JKrim.
