"HOLY FAMILY."
POSSIBLY ORIGINAL RUBENS. SOLD FOR HALF-A-CROWN. In the charge of the director of the Sydney. Art Gallery is a picture which may bo the original "Holy Family" of Rubens, though ib is generally believed that the original painting bearing this title is in the Antwerp gallery. The one now in Sydney was purchased in a Goulburn auction room recently for half-a-crown. Mr P. McDonnell, n Goulburn dealer, picked up a quantity of furniture, pictures, and other articles, ;<;nong them being the painting. He did not attach much value to it alt ho time, and considered that 2s 6d was a fair price, but a few minutes later a lady in the mart offered him £lO for it. Ho then had a closer look at it, and found on the bark of the canvas a label, in writing yellowed by time, inscribed: ' The Holy Family; Rubens." He promptly refused the £lO, and has ever since been Irving to find out whether the picture is an original or not. The picture, which is exciting a crood deal of discussion, formerly belonged to Mr A. McAlister, an amateur artist. On his death, which was closely followed by that of his wife, his effects were sold by auction. There ; is no evidence that tho McAlister family regarded the. painting as being of great value.
