COUNTY CENTRES.

(From Our Own Correspondents.)

METHVEN. The following records of rainfall are reported by Mr James Carr, " lUuletone," Methven, for the month ending April 3: —Rain fell on eight days, the maximum fall being on the 16th, when 2.46 in was recorded; total for the month, 4.09 in; total for the year 1924 to date., 10.27 in, and for the corresponding period in 1924 11.79 in. The following are the vital statistics for the month ending April, with last year's figures in parentheses:—Births 2 (5), deaths 0 (0), marriages 0 (0). After several days of beautiful weather a north-wester on Friday made things very unpleasant. A change from the south-west came up early on Saturday morning, and 40 points of rain were recorded.

RAKAIA. After- a week of beautiful Indian summer weather rain began to fall earl}' on Saturday morning, and continued for several hours, 32 points being recorded. The rainfall for the month of April was 688 points. The country is now looking green.

MOUNT SOWERS. A perusal of the new railway timetable shows that the local branch line is not affected. What most travellers are interested in is the seemingly interminable time that the tram takes to pull up the steady grade in the evenins One can never be sure whether it will arrive at 6 or 7, and many are the weary hours spent at the station " waiting for the train." It would be wise policy on the part of the railway officials to look into the matter, as many say they much prefer going in and out' to town by car. After three days of "Indian summer" weather a change occurred late on Friday night, and very heavy rain fell continuing as light ram and drizzle during the morning. As the temperature is 40, this will put more snow on the back-country, which was almost clear.

LAGMHOR. The late rain has had a beneficial effect upon the pastures. Owing to the warm days that followed there has been a decided growth. The threshing is nearing a close, the mills having had a good run. One mill has over 100,000 bushels to its credit and still has more to come. There is very little clover kept in the district this season, tor although the clover crops looked promising they did not fill well The Lagmhor-Wcsterfield branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society held its annual meeting at Mr V. W. Wright's, Lagmhor. The organsing .secretary for Canterbury, Miss Cooper, was present and addressed the meeting, sneaking of the general progress made by the society during the past year. Afternoon tea was dispensed by Mrs Wright. PENDARVES. The monthly euchre tournament held bv the Hall Committee took place on Friday night, the attendance being fair The ladies' prize was won by Miss Olive Clark with 122 points. Miss Cathie Bruce being second with 11/ points, and Miss Daisy Watson third with 103 points. The men's prize was won by Mr W. Hurst with 120 points Mr J. Beattie being Second with 114 Points, and Mr C. Johnson third with 113 points. After supper a short dance was held, the music being provided by I Miss A. Watson, Miss Ida Bruce, and ' Mr Eric Rankin.
