OFFENCE IN NORTH AUCKLAND. WHANGAREI, March 12. When the police arrived unannounced at the Parua Bay Hotel late on the afternoon of Sunday, February 8, they walked in by a back way, and entered the bar, where they found several men playing cards. One had' a bottle of beer, and none denied having had a "spot," while the licensee, Ernest Devan, admitted he had been caught. The licensee appeared before Mr R. W. Tate, S.M., charged with keeping the premises clpeji for the sale of liquor during hours when they were supposed to be closed. He pleaded guilty. It was urged on his behalf, however, that he was aroused from a siesta by some boarders, and took them to the bar instead of a private room. Some others joined the party, and then the police came along. Devan was convicted and fined £2. with, posts, 7s.
