THE REDFERN MURDER.
GIRL'S FIANCEE ARRESTED.
(Per Press Association—Copyright.) SYDNEY, March 13. Details of the Redferm tragedy show that apparently the women were attacked while asleep. Miss Quirk, who has regained consciousness, awoke and threw up her hands to defend her head. A ring was cut clean through by the blow of the tomahawk.
One supposition is that the murderer intended to attack Mrs Quirk only, but when he saw Miss Quirk awake he attacked her to prevent his recognition being disclosed. Aves, a boarder, who is stated to be the fiancee of Miss Quirk, lived with the family. Smith objected to this arrangement, and it led to disagreements, and some weeks ago Smith went to live at Woywoy, taking with him two boxes. The boy who clambered on to the roof had a narrow escape. When the shot was fired he saved himself by lying prone until ordered by the police to descend.
Aves has been arrested and charged with murder. He made a statement to the police, the nature of which has not been disclosed.
