DAVIS CUP CONTEST. NEW YORK, Feb. 24. The first formal challenge for the Davis Cup in the American zone has been received from Japan. Canada and Australia have also indicated their intention to compete in this division. Japan probably will depend on several players resident in the United States, including Shimidzu, Fukuda, Harada, and Okamoto. The following will represent Methven A grade v. Mount Somers, at Mount Somers, in the club competition to-morrow : —Miss Briden, Mrs Holmes, Mrs Lloyd, Miss Cosgriff, F. Hardey, W. P. Cosgriff, A. J. Wilson, M. A. Stone, Tlie B grade team will play Te Marae at Methven, and the following team have been selected: —Mrs White, Miss Aitken, Miss James, Miss Pawson, White, R. G. M. Dart, T. Cotterrill, and E. Hawkhead. The following will represent Tinwald to-morrow: No. 1 v. Ashburton, at Ashburton— Field, Barnett, W. Bell, S. Hockings, Mesdames Hulme, Gudsoll, Barnett, and Miss Hulme. No 2 v. Mount Somers, at Tinwald— Tarbotton, E. Tarbotton, R. Tarbotton, S. Watson, Misses Judd and Millichamp, Mesdames Millichamp and Hockings. Emergencies: R. Millichamp,, Mrs McMurtrie, and Miss Gudsell.
