TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Feb. 27, 1900). Board of Education. —The Chertsey School Committee has voted for Messrs < Rennie, McMillan, and Baker, as members of the Board of Education. None in Ashburton.—The present war in South Africa has its lessons for everybody. The “Cromwell Argus hears that a member of the chronically impecunity fraternity in Clyde is going to dye himself khaki so as to escape the notice of his creditors. Sporting.—The New Zealand Trotting Association has been advised by the Colonial Secretary of the tota-isator licenses allocated to affiliated clubs for the season, 1899-1900. The Ashburton Club has received one permit. It is considered likely the Ashburton and AVellington Clubs will each receive a second permit. Upper Ashburton Road Board There were present at the ordinary meeting of the Upper Ashburton Road Board, held in the Board’s office m West Street. Messrs 0. J. Harper (chairman), M. Stitt. I. Sargent, G. A. 'M. Buckley, and J. Tucker. An apology was received for the absence of Mr K. Campbell. His AVorship the Mayor (Mr H. Friedlander) and Cr. Thomas waited upon the Board with reference to the bringing of jwater along the Board s roads, and after discussion the matter was left for the Board to consider what arrangments it would be prepared to enter into with the Council. Personal.—At the meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board on Tuesday, Mr 33. G. Wright was elected chairman for the ensuing year. A Bazaar.—The Hon. AA r . J. Stewaro is to open the Hakateramea Bazaar on March 8.
